Dry Needling
Dry needling, also known as trigger point dry needling, is a technique employed by certain doctors, osteopaths, and physiotherapists. It distinguishes itself from acupuncture as the practitioner’s focus lies not on influencing meridians or energy forces, but rather on alleviating areas of tension within the body’s soft tissues.
During dry needling sessions, thin solid needles are inserted through the skin into trigger points—tension areas within muscle tissue that may induce discomfort or pain, including referred pain affecting other body parts. The needles serve to stimulate the tissue and prompt the release of tension, without the administration of any substance or medication. Depending on the condition being treated and its duration, the needles may be inserted to varying depths and durations, either deep into the tissue or more superficially.
Patients may experience a range of sensations during dry needling, such as muscle soreness, aching, and muscle twitching upon needle insertion. It is important to note that dry needling is typically integrated into a comprehensive treatment plan alongside other therapeutic techniques, including manual therapy and exercise/stretching prescriptions.
Dry needling has demonstrated effectiveness in addressing various conditions, including muscle tension and pain, joint problems, tendonitis, migraine and tension-type headaches, whiplash, repetitive motion disorders such as carpal tunnel syndrome, spinal pain (cervical, thoracic, or lumbar), pelvic pain, shoulder complex issues, tennis/golfers elbow, postural strain, and plantar fasciitis.
